For my capstone project as a college student, I undertook the task of curating and branding a double feature film event, selecting How the Grinch Stole Christmas and The Nightmare Before Christmas. These films, both beloved holiday classics, present a compelling juxtaposition. While How the Grinch Stole Christmas exudes a brighter and more optimistic tone, The Nightmare Before Christmas explores darker visual and thematic landscapes. I embraced these contrasting elements as the foundation for designing and branding distinct candy packaging for each film.
"Ribbon Twists," the confection associated with How the Grinch Stole Christmas, takes its name from the brightly colored presents central to the narrative. Its packaging features vibrant hues of green and red, and the candy itself offers a sweet apple flavor. In contrast, "Knuckle Bones," inspired by Jack Skellington's skeletal form, is presented in packaging with a black and burgundy palette, and the candy consists of salty black licorice gummies.
Despite the inherent differences between the two candy and brand systems, a cohesive element was essential for the double feature presentation. To achieve this, I designed a box that allows for the candies to be packaged together. The event itself was titled "Stealing Christmas," a thematic link that acknowledges the shared narrative threads of the two films. A significant component of this project involved photographing the final packaging designs. While I possessed prior experience with photography, this undertaking represented my first formal photoshoot. Utilizing backdrops and props to establish specific scenes, I found it particularly rewarding to witness the physical manifestation of my packaging within a designed environment.
