This project explored the concept of Shikkake, a design technique that subtly influences behavior through indirect nudging. Focusing on the pervasive issue of distraction during study or work breaks, I observed that readily accessible apps like TikTok and YouTube often derail even short breaks, transforming them into unproductive time sinks. A five minute break can easily become a two hour scrolling binge.
Recognizing the detrimental impact of these distractions, I developed a series of "Brain Brake" card decks, each featuring cards with unique prompts designed to be completed within a 3-5 minute timeframe. These prompts are carefully curated to cater to diverse preferences. For those interested in puzzles, we have “Brain Brake: For ThInkers.” For those who love art, we have “Brain Brake: For Creatives.” There’s a set for everyone! Each set offers a refreshing and engaging alternative to the pervasive allure of social media and other digital distractions during short breaks. By providing a structured and engaging alternative to mindless scrolling, the Brain Brake cards aim to enhance focus, improve productivity, and promote a more mindful approach to work breaks, ultimately fostering a more balanced and productive workflow.
