TYPEFACES USED: Avory Latin and Trade Gothic

PROGRAMS USED: Illustrator

This project tasked me with creating a graph to visually represent my journey as a graphic design student. The graph had to incorporate three critical variables: Bloom's Taxonomy, the AIGA NASAD Competencies, and a personal variable of my choosing. Reflecting on my personal design process, I identified a strong correlation between my creative output and my musical engagement. Thus, I chose to incorporate the amount of music I listened to during each project as the third variable.

To visually embody this connection, I designed the graph in the form of a record player, a nod to my vinyl record collection. This thematic approach informed the selection of colors, typefaces, and textures, resulting in a design with a distinct retro aesthetic. The graph effectively communicates the range of information through a combination of color, height, and descriptive labels. Rather than relying on a conventional key, I incorporated elements commonly found on a record player, seamlessly integrating these visual cues into the overall design. This approach not only enhances the visual appeal but also adds a layer of personal significance to the project.

Bloom's taxonomy is a framework used to categorize educational goals, focusing on different levels of cognitive thinking. The AIGA NASAD competencies, on the other hand, are a set of standards that outline the knowledge and skills expected of graphic design professionals. While Bloom's taxonomy helps educators structure learning objectives, the AIGA NASAD competencies guide the development of curriculum and assessment in graphic design education programs. There are 8 essential AIGA competencies and 6 major levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy. For instance, a graphic design student might be asked to analyze a famous logo (Bloom's level of analysis) which aligns with the AIGA NASAD competencies related to visual communication and design thinking.
